|WOW Woolton WI||
On Wednesday 15th May, a needle felting workshop was held for members, led by Glenys and ably supported by Sandra. We were well taught by Glenys, with most of the group being new to this skill. We created butterflies, using different coloured wools, a vicious looking needle! and a sponge pad. We all found the process very pleasant and almost therapeutic, with chatting going on as we worked. Everybody produced a butterfly and we went home with materials to make another one, perhaps at a better standard second time round! Hopefully many of us will submit a needle felted insect for the County Show.
The sewing group are getting involved in the Marie Curie 60 years in Woolton celebrations this summer. We are making cushions with the new 60 years logos on to sell at the Marie Curie Summer Fair in July and a quilt for display in the hospice. Other organisations are involved in the celebrations: Woolton in Bloom has already got a special display near the Derby Arms and where the Tommy the WW1 soldier was, near Sainsbury's. As summer bedding comes in we will see more and more yellow featuring in the village. In fact we hear that Woolton is to turn yellow in the month of June!
To prepare for our cushion making and quilting, the sewing group and friends had a trip to Longsight fabric market in Manchester on Wednesday 1st May. We had a lovely lunch on the famous "Curry Mile" in Manchester before bringing our bags full of fabric back to Woolton. Some of the fabrics bought might end up in items for the Lancashire Show in September! Thanks to Margaret who organised the trip!
A needle felting workshop was held recently and participating ladies brought their miniature teddies to show everyone at the July meeting. They were so appealing! Sore fingers were mentioned but the results looked fabulous!
The recent paper bead making and jewellery workshops were a resounding success. Ladies made the beads at the first session last month and on Thursday 17th May they produced some beautiful pieces. Well done ladies and a big thank you to Glenys and Sandra for leading the sessions.
Glenys and Sandra held an embroidery workshop on Monday 19th March. This was the second session and ladies continued practising skills from the first session and learning new stitches. The French Knot seemed to feature quite a lot! From all accounts it was a lovely session with everyone chatting and stitching away!
Glenys will be holding Paper bead making and follow on Jewellery making workshops on Thursdays 19th April and 17th May 1-3pm at the Arncliffe Centre. Cost for 2 workshops is £10, materials included.
we will make out paper beads at the April workshop and then use them to make a variety of jewellery in May. Ladies who came to previous workshops were amazed at the delightful pieces they created.

This popular workshop, on Thursday 23rd November, was booked up very quickly. The ladies who attended seemed to have a great time and worked really hard as you will see from the photos. They were expertly taught and guided by the "garlanding" ladies who decorate the Hall for Christmas with greenery from the grounds and beyond. All the WI ladies went home with their garland - much heavier than they thought they would be. One lady thought she would be able to go to town by bus with it in her bag! No chance! No doubt their friends and families will be very impressed with their finished garlands.

About 12 ladies gathered at the Arncliffe Centre on Monday 25th September for an embroidery workshop. Glenys and Sandra too the afternoon and we sat down to a well prepared session. We each had fabric, a wooden embroidery hoop to work with and lengths of wool. Glenys demonstrated various stitches and she and Sandra whizzed round the table helping and encouraging. We each left with a piece of work well on the way to being finished and had learned many new techniques. Our work evolved which was a very liberating experience - no following of a design or pattern. Glenys and Sandra were expert teachers and as in all good 'Blue Peter' type experiences, Glenys had brought along a few "she had made earlier" for us to refer to. few of us brought along our finished work to the meeting on Tuesday to encourage more to take part in such workshops.
Apologies from the editor - this should have been posted last month...... better late than never! A small group of ladies enjoyed an afternoon's workshop with Christine and I think you'll agree, the results speak for themselves! Well done ladies!
