WOOLTON W.I. REPORT ON 13TH JULY 2015 MEETING
Our July Meeting was a Flower Arrangement demonstration by one of our Joint members, Anne Ludwig. Ann is a member of Halewood W.I. and Woolton W.I. She teaches for Knowsley Adult Education and as well as Flower arrangement she also teaches Cake decoration.
For her first demonstration she used a cardboard vase with cellophane and a block of oasis inside. She suggested that decorations can be added to the outside of the vase. Anne used a beautiful gold butterfly. Anne used sunflowers and chrysanthemums in shades of yellow as well as carnations. Anne gave us a tip that when putting flowers into oasis always cut horizontally. She told us that this display should last for 2 weeks. Carnations and Chrysanthemums last the longest of all the flowers.
For her second display Anne used a saucer (but a teapot or shoe could also be used). She taped the oasis on to the saucer and started by doing a triangle shape. She used ivy and privet and had a tall pink Lavetera at the back of the display. She added Bay tree branches and then Peony roses and Sweet William. The display looked amazing and was in the shape of a triangle. Anne suggested that this display would look good in a hallway. Anne told us that the best way to soak oasis was to put it into a bucket of water, letting it float and leave it to absorb the water. When the oasis is at the bottom it is ready to use for your flower arrangement. She also suggested that using flowers from the hedgerow can add to a display and suggested Cow Parsley.
The final display was on an oval dish again taped oasis and then Anne used Bamboo to start with in the middle with greenery going around the bottom to hide the oasis. This display represented Woolton and Larkspur, Roses (representing the Rose Garden in Woolton Woods), Snap dragons and finally Purple stocks. This display was so eye-catching and was my favourite.
Anne had brought along a bottle of wine and she proceeded to do a small display on the side of the bottle which again looked amazing. All the floral displays went into the raffle and some of our members were lucky enough to take home a beautiful display. Everyone enjoyed the evening and our thanks to Anne for making such wonderful arrangements.
At the end of the meeting we had a short report from Ann Large who had been lucky enough to win a ticket to go to Buckingham Palace in June to attend the Queens Garden Party. She had had a wonderful experience and it was nice to hear all about her day. Ann wore the dress (black shift dress with beautiful flowers printed on the front and back panels) that she had worn to represent our W.I.
