Jan, our president, continued on the theme of Health Awareness and spoke to us about Ovarian cancer. This can be a sensitive area to talk about, but Jan gave us some facts and pointers to be aware of:
*7000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in UK annually
*Smear tests do not pick up this cancer
*Symptoms can include a persistent bloated feeling, needing to wee more often and tummy pain. (see Ovarian Cancer website for accurate information)
*Some symptoms are similar to IBS or colitis
*Although more cases are amongst post-menopausal women, younger women can be affected too
*Only 3% of women are confident in spotting symptoms
** Go to your GP with any concerns
To end this item on a really positive note, one of our ladies spoke briefly about her successful treatment for ovarian cancer 20 years ago!
And finally ... Sandra talked to us about upcycling and furniture restoration and showed us a coupe of examples. She is holding a workshop in January with more details next meeting. She is also holding an event at the antique shop on the evening of Friday 4th November - mince pies, mulled wine and carol singing.
